How to restore dull or faded paintwork

THE CAUSES

We know that overtime, car body paintwork goes losing vivacity and brightness. Which are the causes of this process?

The main threat is represented by the weather. In particular, the sunlight’ power fade the colour. In this context, it’s important to remember that the ruined layer is not the paintwork, but the protective layer that is applied on the paint base. It’s named “clearcoat”, or “transparent layer” (we’ve already talked about it in this article). Over time, the UV rays’ power compromise the clearcoat. That’s a real problem, because this is the layer that gives brightness and vivacity to the car body.

Anyway, we can’t only blame the sunlight. There are also other possible causes of the transparent layer’ corruption. For example, the application of low-quality shampoos can overtime ruin the surface, because these products are usually too much aggressive in them action. Another possible cause, it’s simply the passage of time. It’s quite normal that, over time, the car body become dull and faded.

THE SOLUTION

We’ve talked about the problems. Now, which are the solutions? You will be glad to know that, through a polishing process, it’s possible to restore oxidation or matting of every degree. Indeed, the two-layers structure allows to work on the surface, to re-give the original brightness through the abrasion of the transparent’ ruined area. Let’s see how to proceed.

HOW TO RESTORE

First, you’ve to choose the products to use. How we’ve already said in the article named “how to polish the car body”, this choice depending on the defects’ degree.

We can identify two possible situations:

  • Hard oxidation or fading, let’s apply PAICAR 01 combined with DA-01
  • Medium or light oxidation/defects, let’s apply PAICAR 02 combined with DA-02

These two possibilities are valid for the first step, so the abrasive step (where the defects are removed). In both cases, the working process is the same:

In these cases, it’s also possible to use the Sl3 fine wool pad combined with PAICAR 01 or PAICAR 02. The wool pad increases the abrasive power in the polishing process. (we’ve talked about that in the article “wool or foam pad”)

Next, it’s possible to increase the brightness of the car body by using a refinishing polish. These are very delicate products, that permit to achieve high gloss levels. In this case, the choice depending on what you’re looking for:

  • PAICAR 04 and DA-04 should be used if you want to apply a protective film on the car body. PAICAR 04 contains a specific mix of polishing and waxing agents, which power the gloss and protect the surface from weathering.
  • PAICAR 03 and DA-03 should be chosen if the goal is to achieve an excellent gloss level, without adding a protective film on the surface. In particular, the suggestion is to choose PAICAR 03 if you want to successively apply a nano-protection or ceramic product.

Thanks to the car polishing, damages are not covered, but they’re completely removed. The clearcoat is reshaped and flattened, ensuring a homogeneous and shiny surface. There is therefore no danger that imperfections will “reappear” after a short time.
